VATIAC (Integrated Technological Validator of Accelerator Systems)

The Center for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) has awarded the UTE HACES-DONES consortium, composed of EDAIR TECHNOLOGIES S.L., ANTEC MAGNETS, S.L.U., SUPRASYS, S.L., COMMTIA SYSTEMS S.A., HI-IBERIA INGENIERIA Y PROYECTOS S.L., and EMPRESARIOS AGRUPADOS INTERNACIONAL, S.A., the lot 1 of the Pre-commercial Public Procurement (CPP) contract for R&D services to develop innovative solutions in the field of validation of systems and materials in fusion energy (DONES), for an amount of €26,255,000. This contract, named VATIAC (Integrated Technological Validator of Accelerator Systems), and led by EAI, aims to validate high-intensity hadron accelerator systems for the IFMIF-DONES project (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – DEMO-Oriented Neutron Source).

Located in Granada, IFMIF-DONES is a scientific infrastructure designed to support the development of nuclear fusion energy, a type of clean, safe, and sustainable energy. Its main objective is to test and evaluate advanced materials that can withstand the extreme conditions inside a nuclear fusion reactor, such as high temperatures and high doses of radiation. Through this initiative, the reaction of materials to neutron radiation generated in an environment similar to that of a fusion reactor will be evaluated. Its development is aimed at preparing the next generation of fusion reactors, such as DEMO (Demonstration Power Plant), the intermediate step before commercial reactors.
The scope of the VATIAC project includes the design, manufacturing, assembly, and testing of a validator, consisting of: high-energy transport line (HEBT), medium-energy transport line (MEBT), radiofrequency system (RFPS), test bench or DPLATE, auxiliary systems, central control system (ICS), and operability evaluation (RAMI).

The scope of COMMTIA consists of:
  • Coordination and management of the high-power radiofrequency amplification system.
  • Design and manufacturing of a prototype of the power RF system (RFPS) for VATIAC, which includes:
    • RF amplification stations for a cryomodule with superconducting cavities
    • RF amplification stations for the MEBT
The project is structured in three phases: PHASE I, manufacturing design, with a duration of 9 months, officially began on 13/01/2025. PHASE II, validator manufacturing, will have a duration of 24 months. PHASE III, validator testing, will be developed over 7 months.
The total budget awarded is €26,255,000. The contract is co-financed by CDTI and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2021-2027.
